R-22 Refrigerant? Don’t delay!
In 1990, United States Congress passed the “Clean Air Act” which became effective on July 1, 1992. This Act prohibits individuals from knowingly venting ozone-depleting compounds used as refrigerants into the atmosphere. Freon is a chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) that will damage the Earths protective ozone layer if released. If your unit is leaking refrigerant it is also leaking oil, (the lubricating oil is in the refrigerant). The laws governing CFC’s now do not allow your HVAC specialist to add this refrigerant to a leaky system. They are required to locate and repair the leak in the system or replace it with a newer ozone friendly refrigerant, R-410A. Don’t ask them to violate this law! If they are caught they may lose their license!
